afrosurreal writers workshop of oaklandEllen McBarnette, an award winning writer and storyteller, traces her roots from Queens to Harlem to her family’s origins in the Caribbean. Author of the novella, “Negrita,” she explores yesterday, today and tomorrow through a kaleidoscopic microscope and reports her findings in fiction, nonfiction and poetry when not running her urban farm in Hayward, Ca. Dera R. Williams is an Oakland resident whose family was a part of the Great Migration. Dera’s childhood collection, In My Backyard: Stories of Growing Up in Oakland is forthcoming in Fall 2024. She is also completing a Great Migration novel exploring the relationship between myth and honoring oral and family history. Sumiko Saulson is Bram Stoker Nominated for their 2022 collection The Rat King: A Book of Dark Poetry (Dooky Zines), and an award-winning author of Afrosurrealist and multicultural sci-fi and horror whose latest novel Somnalia: Metamorphoses of Flynn Keahi is available on Mocha Memoirs Press and whose latest poetry book Melancholia is out on Bludgeoned Girls Press. Afrosurrealist Writer Award winner 2018 for "A Balm of Brackish Water" Coleman Connor is an Architectural Designer specializing in emerging technologies and sustainability, with experience in airport, skyscraper, and commercial projects. His work on futuristic concepts, such as habitats on the Moon and Mars, fuels his passion for writing and dreaming about possible futures Wandra Williams is a mad+crazy+cool nerd hailing from The Stack by way of The Rich.
