The Throwback Special

The Throwback was a low-tech literary journal edited and distributed by Dan O’Connell. Several issues were put out in the early 2000s. It was re-born for Beast Crawl 2022, and still lives. This year we feature five stellar writers from Nick's Lounge.

Dan O’Connell (aka Dan O.) is a four-time award winning poet, and multiple finalist and honorable mention. His poems have appeared over eighty times. He is the author of three full-length collections of poetry, Different Coasts, Theory of Salvation, and A Third Set of Teeth, and several chapbooks, including State of the Union, and Sheltered in Place Poems & Art - A Collaboration. ​​

​​Barbara Saunders writes poetry with mythological, historical, and biographical themes. Her poetry has been published by Highland Park Poetry and won prizes and honorable mentions from the Bay Area Poets' Coalition and the Ina Coolbrith Circle. Barbara has featured at Saturday Night Special, a Virtual (formerly East Bay) Open Mic.

​Peter Thomas Bullen cuts hair by day, writes at night, if awake. His first chapbook Wallflower came out from Nomadic Press in 2016. Joshua Mohr called it “playful and cerebral, funny and sad.” He recently finished up a new manuscript that is an ongoing meditation on longing, loneliness, desire, and mortality. Life, in other words.

​Lisa Martinovic has performed on stages from LitQuake to Lollapalooza. Her writing has been featured in The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry, Tikkun, Sparkle & Blink, CounterPunch, CommonDreams and the San Francisco Chronicle. Lisa is currently writing flash-memoir and essays, and performing improv with Oakland’s Morpho Theater.

Sandra Wassilie believes storytelling nourishes our humanity. She co-founded the Bay Area Generation reading series and has served as poetry editor at Fourteen Hills. Her book The Dream That Is Childhood: a Memoir in Verse (2020) depicts wilderness life in interior Alaska. Other poetry appears in journals, anthologies, and a chapbook Smoke Lifts (2014). She is a mom, grandma, and partner, living in Oakland since 2007. She currently manages her apartment building, and edits manuscripts.
